Thread: Pennies

    Lightbulb Pennies

During the Super Bowl, Trump decided that the U.S. Mint will no longer make pennies. When banks run out of pennies and businesses cannot get enough pennies to make change, what should happen? Should the business round up the change in the customer's favor, or should the business round down the change in the business' favor?

It's not as if eliminating the minting of pennies will eliminate cents in commercial transactions. Even if businesses set their prices in multiples of a nickel, they will still be required to collect and remit sales taxes to the nearest cent.

It reminds me of that time in Superman 3 when Richard Pryor figured out how to program a computer to steal all the rounded cents and add them to Pryor's paycheck, a scheme which of course culminated in a supercomputer that tried to take over the world.
In the world I see, you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.

“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Let’s rip the waste out of our great nations budget, even if it’s a penny at a time,” Trump said in a post to social media as he returned to Washington from the Super Bowl.

The penny has been under fire for years, with the movement to eliminate the penny picking up steam last month after Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency posted on X calling attention to the high cost of producing the single-cent coin.

Trump is probably correct that we need to eliminate the penny. But it needs to be done in an orderly fashion. Eliminating the coin will not eliminate use of cents in electronic transactions. In 2024, the U.S. Mint produced 3.2 billion pennies. Without those pennies, businesses and consumers will experience a lot of frustration. Truly eliminating the penny in a way that is legal will require action by Congress, which should be done in a way that gives states, banks and others involved in transaction processing time to adapt.

Or we could just round to the nearest 5 cents just like the Europeans do it.

IE: 1 & 2 would get rounded down while 3 & 4 would get rounded up.

The math is so simple even girls can figure it out!

Oh, what will it tell us if it's rounded up?
