Happened across this article on CNBC citing an article off of Bankrate.com talking about what that website characterizes as the hidden costs of homeownership. Gonna have to call bullshit as the largest expense the website factors into it's calculation are energy, internet, and cable bills.. yes really.

Since when have basic services such as electricity and internet expenses been a surprise or unanticipated expense for Americans? Whether you rent or own, chances are you pay at least one of those there items every month.

Why then would a website try and pass those off as something prospective homeowners ought to be aware of; are they trying to turnoff readers from considering buying a home or did the writer honestly think renting a home universally mean you don't pay any utilities?

It's incredibly variable, especially if you're the type to shop around for better deals in homeowners insurance and a decent home warranty to offset the cost of big ticket repairs.

In my area, median rent is $2700 a month for a two bedroom, plus the expense of all utilities except garbage. Meanwhile, my mortgage with property tax and homeowners is just shy of $1600 a month for there bedrooms and two baths. Utilities are obviously more, but those are what I'd pay in a rental. Yeah the $900 I pay for a home warranty annually, $300 quarterly for sewer and $54 for garbage wouldn't be my responsibility as a renter, but that is still quite a bit less than renting. The mortgage interest write off is pretty nice too.

Bankrate could have took out all of those utility expenses that most renters also pay and had a much more objective figure to compare against interest write offs, limited state and local tax write offs, and principle reduction which is tantamount to a personal savings account. Those items factored in, owning a house is a far more financially sound decision.

A lot of apartments roll internet and electricity and water into the rent, especially ones near colleges. The last place I rented an apartment, you didn't pay anything but the rent. Wifi, water, electricity were all included in it. If you went over on water or electricity you'd get charged more, but I never did that.
