To be fair, do you believe the Republicans would have an open primary if the sitting Republican President declared they were running for President for a 2nd term?

They wouldn't.

As far as I understand, I'd have to follow up the research... but both the R and D National Committees are required to hold debates if poll support for a candidate surpasses a certain threshold.

So a candidate meeting that threshold can demand the debate, or acquiesce, to the incumbent.

This time the DNC is just deciding, nope! not going to do it at all... even though there are 2 other Democrat Presidential candidates polling over 5%.

Found this on the R side also... which I disagree with. I can't find any %'s for competition from the 2020 primary though (perhaps someone else can dig them up)... so no idea if contenders were polling high enough.

It's shitty either way... but more so when such a large % are for other candidates, and their National Committees ignore them. Shameful on both sides IMO.

In 2020, there was no sitting Democrat President.. so they established polling percentages as a way to narrow down the field so we didn't have 50 people running for President on the stage.
