Self employed people actually pay double. They have to pay for not only their own earnings but also the employer portion of the so-called payroll taxes. Nobody that works for their money enjoys it being stolen (taxed). Our country was founded by patriots that didn’t want to pay taxes. A lot of people also have side hustles that the IRS has no business knowing about. Taking the side of the Galactic Empire doesn’t win you the moral high ground.

Yes the maximum earnings on social security did go up considerably this year (2023) to account for crippling inflation. Thanks for the reminder.

$7.7 billion per year in just 2008-2010 dollars represents the portion of tax evasion totaling $407B per year that are unpaid. That $7.7b in funding each year being collected would have had a vast boost on the solvency of Social Security. Shocker, self employed individuals aren't compliant with paying their taxes.

I have been self employed since 2005 and I can assure you people who work for themselves do, indeed, pay payroll taxes and even file taxes. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to own a business license in the state of Florida.

Tax evasion is also rampant among the self-employed, according to U.S. government analyses. As the authors of the AEA paper note, the likelihood of self-employment rises as wealth increases. In instances where there is no third-party reporting — like an employer submitting employee wage information to the federal government — the noncompliance rate is 63%, according to IRS research. Misreporting is only at 1% when income amounts are subject to substantial information reporting and withholding.

The IRS calls this “visibility.” Income that self-employed people earn is less “visible” than income earned by someone who works for a company or nonprofit, both of which would report wage information to the IRS every year. Business income made up the biggest chunk — $125 billion — of all underreported individual income, according to the Government Accountability Office report.
