calling someone lame or a variation of it is not something that has gone out of fashion. making fun of someone for sounding like an out of touch old is a tried and true classic that will never die, like making fun of someone for being stupid. making fun of someone for their sexual orientation or their material conditions, however, has, and no one with a normal brain gives a shit if you are those things in 2022.

As you know, the stock market has historically performed much better under Democrat presidents than under Republican presidents. Although the stock market performed better under Trump than under most Republican presidents, average annual returns during Trump's four years were lower than during either of Clinton's and Obama's eight years.

Similarly, GDP growth--arguably the most important economic measure--has been, on average, much better under Democrat than Republican presidents. Trump performed very poorly on GDP, ranking lower than even most Republican presidents.

Unemployment increased, which is bad, over Trump's four years in office. It decreased, which is good, during both Clinton's and Obama's terms.

Except for one or two years during Clinton's time in office, Budget deficits have been too large under all presidents, averaging worse under Republican presidents than under Democrat presidents. Trump was the worst.

There have been, on average, more recessions under Republican presidents than under Democrat presidents. No recessions began during the terms Clinton and Obama, for example. One recession began during Trump's term.

Trump fell in line with other Republican presidents as underperforming on objective economic measures.

Objective numbers fail to capture the more politically important subjective measures of performance, such as who do you think had a higher stock market return or who do you think had higher GDP growth. Trump, I'm guessing, would outperform Democrats on those subjective measures, even in the face of objective proof to the contrary. Subjective assessments drive votes.


People who have seriously studied the economic disparity between Democrat and Republican presidents believe Democrats have just been lucky.

Historical partisan averages certainly do not prove that Biden will perform as well as his Democrat predecessors. The economy is currently breaking records on economic growth, so much so that the Federal Reserve is applying the breaks.

If economics isn't the proper measure of presidential performance, what should it be?
