Do their generals often go in active combat zones or something? I always thought generals were like sitting in an office somewhere just overseeing things.

Russian generals are a lot more proactive than Western ones. They typically are closer to the fight than ours would get.
The Russian military is heavily centralized, whereas Western militaries generally like to be more decentralized. That means that their officers have to be a lot more involved, but if they have officers get killed, they are fucked.
NCOs in the Russian military are basically just paid more but don't typically have as much responsibility as their counterparts in western militaries.
