I think it started with a dumb tweet from Idris Elba and now idiots from places like "The View" and other leftist organizations are calling for it. To be fair I'm not sure if any elected officials in the US have backed the idea yet, but I'm sure it's right around the corner.

At least the guy in that article says the ID should be kept private, possibly even from the social media companies via using a third party verification site. But dipshits on "The View" (and I'm pretty sure even Idris Elba himself) said they backed this idea because they felt people should be able to know the identify of anyone who posts on social media so they can publicly shame anyone who posts something they don't approve of, thus meaning they want this information to be publicly available to everyone.
