I think it started with a dumb tweet from Idris Elba and now idiots from places like "The View" and other leftist organizations are calling for it. To be fair I'm not sure if any elected officials in the US have backed the idea yet, but I'm sure it's right around the corner.

Here is an opinion piece from Newsweek on the idea.

At least the guy in that article says the ID should be kept private, possibly even from the social media companies via using a third party verification site. But dipshits on "The View" (and I'm pretty sure even Idris Elba himself) said they backed this idea because they felt people should be able to know the identify of anyone who posts on social media so they can publicly shame anyone who posts something they don't approve of, thus meaning they want this information to be publicly available to everyone.

this is so stupid. People can spoof IPs and do all sorts of crazy nonsense already to conceal ID, surely there is no way for someone to use someone elses SSN or other ID info to do the same thing, thats unpossible!

For those individuals without access to ID documents (who the U.K. government was alluding to when referring to the impact on "vulnerable users" of ID verification) they could be offered a limited social media experience where they can only DM or comment on posts of friends and family, and not on public figure profiles.

Considering all of this information is bound to be uploaded somewhere if this dumb idea ever gets implemented (whether via laws or the companies themselves cave to external pressure) then it stands to reason it only takes one hack or one unscrupulous employee to release all of the stored IDs to bad actors and they can impersonate pretty much anyone they want.

It's just a dumb idea all around and goes against the very nature and original principal of the internet: anonymity for those who choose it.

Imagine Person A hates Person B with a fiery passion. Person A manages to get a hold of Person B's ID (maybe they used to be friends, or they are ex-girlfriend/ex-boyfriend so they have access to their house or at least had access at one point). Person A then proceeds to create many social media accounts with Person B's ID, Person A is now VERIFIED to be Person B as per the law/rules.

EVERYONE can now see all of the horrible and despicable things Person A is saying and they will of course think Person B is really saying them and they can now view Person B's ID to at the very least get their real name and it's only a matter of a single 1 minute internet search to pull up all of the information on Person B, including where they live, where they work, etc.

This is what these crazy motherfuckers are proposing.

Freedom of speech is a constitutionally protected right. I don't remember anywhere in the first amendment it saying "You totally have to identify yourself and open yourself up to physical and other such attacks if you want to speak your mind! LOL!"
