It's called listening and learning. It's not pretending- it's taking the message that was communicated to you and helping to amplify it. It's on the "literally the least you can do" ally list. Silencing that instead of engaging with it doesn't help black people in this country.
And growing up in a biracial family with siblings whose skin is much darker than mine and watching them navigate the world around them and seeing how differently it treated me vs them....let's just say that, while I will never understand what it means to be black in America or even what it means to be my siblings and other family members on that side, the issue of institutionalized racism in this country is neither novel nor hypothetical for me.
