Here is my faithful summary of Lamar Alexander's statement..

• Trump did it.
• Trump's behavior was inappropriate.
• We have ample proof that he did it. We do not need additional witnesses.
• It was not bad enough to remove him from office.
• No Republicans voted for the impeachment in the House. Impeachment only works when there is bipartisan support.
• The voters can sort it out.

This is going to be the most controversial paragraph from his statement..

It was inappropriate for the president to ask a foreign leader to investigate his political opponent and to withhold United States aid to encourage that investigation. When elected officials inappropriately interfere with such investigations, it undermines the principle of equal justice under the law. But the Constitution does not give the Senate the power to remove the president from office and ban him from this year’s ballot simply for actions that are inappropriate.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing all of the evidence dragged up despite all the opposition and obstruction presented by the White House. The Judiciary is an entirely separate branch of the federal government. The House enacted their /sole/ constitutional right to investigate and impeach a sitting president. The President, for all that he did managed to land himself a second impeachment charge. I imagine the third, fourth and fifth impeachment charge will follow the same format.

Huge drop in the stock market when the Senate decided not to have witnesses at the trial. I think it's because investors were disappointed that they won't have anything good to watch on teevee once this is over and definitely not because it means Trump will remain in office.
