    No, you are misunderstanding how it works. No one is getting paid, non-essential personnel just don't have to go into work.

    The secret service is essential personnel though. Is that shit a skeleton crew at this point? Not an actual crew of skeletons though, that'd be way too rad.

    They are essential, that is why they are at work not getting paid, instead of at home not getting paid.

    Secret Service kinda gets a little hooked up, because the agency still has a travel budget they can draw from if they travel, which is common for them. Their regular paychecks though? Nope.

    You're right, with the VA and Defense Department still receiving pay I thought certain federal employees were deemed super necessary and thus still received a paycheck during a shutdown, but apparently it's just because they are funded differently but if the shutdown lasts long enough (which is unlikely) they will stop receiving pay as well.

    The DoD and the VA was funded through a different bill passed earlier, so no one in the DoD or the DVA is effected at all. That is why it is a partial shut down.

    Weren't they receiving pay during the last shutdown too? Are they always funded differently?

    They usually get emergency funding for the DoD.
