"We thank soldiers for their service because they devote themselves to protecting our freedoms, and we should. But we should also thank the media for the same reason -- especially when the stakes have never been higher."

Ya! I like this. I've never been comfortable with the military/veteran reverence. Don't get me wrong; it's good to see we've learned lessons that we forgot during Vietnam, but like many good things, it's gone too far. The 4th estate has been under attack for a while. I don't mind them getting some well deserved thanks and recognition.

No. This is him loving himself. Reporters don't go to work knowing that they are putting their lives on the line. They are there for a paycheck and they already get plenty of thanks in recognition in terms of higher salaries and book deals. It doesn't compare to military or first responders. It doesn't compare to the motherfucker that unclogs my toilet.

I think all of what you just posted is incorrect. They get killed a bunch, they risk their lives, they get paid shit, they have to be a big name to get a book deal, their job is enshrined in the 1st amendment and they provide a service we sorely need. Plumbers are cool too, but you're over reacting to this "thank a journo" thing.

People from EVERY profession get killed. The difference is, some go to work knowing that is a part of their job. It isn't a part of the job for Journalists. Wrap your mind around that.

I'm saying journalists don't perform a job any more important than any other job, but they definitely are not out there keeping people safe and protecting rights or defending freedom. They are exercising freedom that others have bled for.
