Yeah, I remember looking at houses when I lived in Hawaii. Fucking ridiculous prices there.

It's $170k in the SF area and $216 in SJ.

Even that is misleading. It assumes 20% down. The median home is $825k. Someone making $170k probably doesn't have $170k down payment sitting in their bank account

Its also an average for the state. You have a huge state where it has much cheaper areas in it, places like Malibu, LA, SJ, and SF probably drastically raise that average.

Why? I don't care where you live, if someone is making $170k and isn't able to easily put away $100k a year in savings, it's a them problem. They are just too unwilling to make the sacrifices needed to do it.

P.S. 401k's can be used without penalty for the down payment on a home for first time buyers. (Sadly the SSI scam doesn't allow you to do this)

About 8 years ago I watched a documentary that talked about the happiness income scale. (I think the documentary is called "Happy"). So basically I'm using $70k as the perfect happiness to income ratio for these numbers, in Time4funs case she should be able to put $50k a year into savings and still lead a perfectly happy life. So she should be able to save up the needed 20% down in roughly 3 years, which really is a reasonable goal in her case considering she has no children.

Believe it or not, there's more to California than just SF and other unaffordable liberal shithole cities.
