Turns out, Trump was being investigated by the FBI over a deal in Latvia with a Putin backer:

In a previously unreported early Trump Russia investigation, the FBI was called in to probe the now-president’s role in a 2010 business venture for a luxury hotel property in Latvia with a group of businessmen and a wealthy Russian who supported Vladimir Putin, The Guardian reported.

The “Trump Plaza Riga” venture was abandoned when Latvia’s anti-corruption bureau questioned Krutoy and another businessman as part of a criminal inquiry. As part of the probe, authorities reportedly heard Trump’s name mentioned by the suspect in secret recordings they obtained. At Latvia’s request in 2015, the FBI also looked into “Trump’s interactions.” The inquiry was officially closed in 2016 with no charges filed

It's astounding how all roads seem to lead right to Russia.

I also just want to take a moment to remind everyone that the Trump campaign denied any contact with Russians during their campaign at least 20 times.

In fact, Jan 2017 Trump tweeted: "Russia has never tried to use leverage over me. I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH RUSSIA - NO DEALS, NO LOANS, NO NOTHING!"

In Nov 2016, Hope Hicks stated: “There was no communication between the campaign and any foreign entity during the campaign.”

Oct 2016, Trump said: “I have nothing to do with Russia, folks, I’ll give you a written statement.” (He was still looking into a Trump Tower Moscow at that point)

And as a reminder- Trump straight up denied that there were any contacts between his campaign advisors/members and Russia during the campiagn:

If nothing else I'm pissed that Russia has become such a HUGE thing in American life because of trump and that all the trumplicans, no matter how much stuff comes out about it, no matter how much trump's story changes, will ever admit they been had by a conman. In fairness, it's not at the level of proven yet. So I would have no problem if they said "You haven't proven collusion beyond a shadow of a doubt".

But the mountains of evidence of collusion are unmistakable. At this point, if there ISN'T any collusion despite everything we know- THAT would be shocking.

I believe it has been proven. Don Jr. colluded with Russian agents to get dirt on Hillary, denied it vehemently a month later, and one year later his father led a cover up which caused Carallo to resign in protest. Textbook collusion with the bonus of denials and coverups.
