I try to be objective...maybe I'm just getting old, and caught up with the "nothing new will ever be as good as the old" mentality.

I listen to new stuff with an open mind, but seriously...they just don't make shit like this anymore.
There's still good hip hop out there

You should listen to Kendrick Lamar though. The West has some life in it yet.
I know Kendrick Lamar...I don't dislike his work entirely, but...still not the same.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying on some level. I get bored to tears by a lot of the Chicago drill stuff my students listen to. There's creative people that show up all over though, just harder to find.

I feel like some of that era got lost in the studio with Dr. Dre, endlessly remaking Detox, like Axl Rose lost it on Chinese Democracy.

Actually a very good analogy, and pretty much nailed it.

I would go a step further though and say some of that era just got lost with that era...I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that people don't do shit like that anymore. It's just recognition of incredible talent, and a sort of musical bookmark for that chapter in artistic history.

Nobody makes a sweeping rock opera quite like Led Zeppelin. Nobody pines quite like Hank Sr. While I might personally find it hard to get into a lot of "modern" hip hop, especially anything involving crunk (although that's not exactly modern anymore...just my personally most disliked sub-genre), people growing up with it probably find it a lot easier to associate with.

I've noticed, though, that even younger people gravitate towards "the classics"...maybe because it's generally accepted as a sign of good taste, or maybe because this whole rap thing really isn't that old yet as far as music goes...the average T.I or 2chainz fan would be more likely to pop in some NWA than the average Blake Shelton or Brad Paisley fan would be to pop in some Hank Sr, I think.

Always liked X. Kinda easy to lose in the Busta Rhymes/Ja Rule/DMX/throaty-angry-aggressive rap style, imo...he didn't really do anything amazing that we can look back and go "man, that X, he was something else"...still fine to listen to.

And honestly, I don't fault X for pimp my ride nearly as much as Ice Cube for Are We There Yet...I mean really, if you want to talk about one of the Kings of hardcore west coast gangsta rap going full commercial, you can't help but point a finger at Cube.

With that being said, get that money.

I can't fault one of the Boyz In The Hood for going to The Player's Club on Friday...Dangerous Ground to be sure, but Cube is like "I Got The Hook Up" and whips his Anaconda out, puts some Torque in to it, some Higher Learning for dem hoes. Next Friday he gets back with Snoop and Dre, says "We Three Kings need to hit the BarberShop, I know we had some beef but Blood Is Thicker Than Water and It's All About The Benjamins anyway, right?"
