I'm pretty sure the guy Tgo's referencing was smoking near the tank.

As far as causing a fire by the explosion itself, no, it's just like an aerosol can. While the contents are highly flammable, the explosion isn't caused by combustion but by penetration or over-pressurization.

Nah, smoking won't cause it. Hell, we were at a Japanese Hibachi restaurant one time and my Great Grandmother's giant oxygen tank was chilling in there.

Enough heat though, it'll explode.... It won't just do it by itself though.

Like any (most?) pressurized gas if the tank heats up enough the tank itself can explode but it's not like a fireball explosion that causes a fire.

Yeah, I edited my post because I remembered oxygen isn't actually flammable. What probably happened is that either guys tank was leaking or there was just a lot of excess oxygen floating around, and his cigarette lit something else on fire which then quickly spread.

Read a news story today claiming that a house caught fire after an oxygen tank "exploded."

It's about time to fly to Kansas again, and drive my dad and his wife back to Florida. What made me frown was my dad's idiot wife asking me if I was sure I wanted to fly, "because all the planes have ebola now." I had to conduct a science class for her, but I'm still half expecting she'll show up at the airport wearing a disposable dust mask.
