This is it exactly. No single person's opinion can be "more important" than anyone else in our society. That's how it's built. Some people are going to be offended no matter what you do. Some people are making it up, some people are not. If we "cater to the offended", we open the door for the sort of pettiness mankind is legendary for.
Whether you like it or not, there's no law against racial slurs. Nor should there be. If they offend you, don't hang around people who use them. It is not, never has been, and God willing never will be the job of (this) government to tell it's citizens what they can and cannot say.
