Rule of war. Don't take what you can't defend. Had they all banded together, they'd have been able to mount a fairly good defense, considering their knowledge of the terrain and use of nature and all that mystical battle mumbo jumbo.
If we hadn't done it, the USA would have been taken over by Asians. Or Russians. Or the FRENCH, god forbid! Think about it. The world wouldn't have just left these people alone.
