We still lead the world in a lot of ways. We've also been the main contributor for a long time. We led on industrialization we can lead on the post industrial era too. Certainly countries like China and India aren't going to get serious about it until we do. They can always just point to us and say that they are trying to only catch/keep up. There's a lot to learn by investing in green technology more. Look at all the stuff we got from NASA and, let's be honest, there's no real reason to fly to the moon.
