I think that's the point. You might be getting more than if you bought in your area, but you aren't building equity. You're paying to receive in the short run, and if you want to move, that's that. Money gone.

He probably paid as much in utilities last month between electric, gas and water owning as I did in rent, he'll never recoup any of that. Anyway, as someone who also used to pay utilities, seeing someone's crazy bill made me appreciative of my arrangement, because I remember some of the crazy bills when living in houses in months that were absolutely freezing, like last month was.
