I disagree. Believing in God is stupid. It's the ultimate externalization and abdication of one's responsibility to think freely.

SP's post about homosexuality is a good example of this. He's trying to fit homosexuality into a box created by the heavily influenced by religion western culture. Without a religion to say that's a bad thing no one would care who screws who and we certainly wouldn't try to call one's sexual orientation a genetic defect.

Where firmly stating that something you can't prove doesn't exist because you can't touch it proves free thought. I love extremists on both sides of this argument they're my favorite.

Using that rationale one should give as much credence to the tooth fairy, easter bunny and bigfoot.

No, not believing in God isn't extremism. If God happens to show up and prove his/her/it's existence then I'll be more than happy to admit that I was incorrect. Until then, any idea based solely on faith or some other self-sealing hypothesis is no worthwhile idea at all.

I think you automatically lose any religious debate when you pull out this line.

Given enough time, the causation behind every phenomenon that a god has once been indicated to be in complete control of (weather, man, creation of the universe, etc) will be established. You can observe the shrinking power of a god throughout recorded history, and it will continue. So I would argue, if there was a god, why should we worship an entity that hasn't done anything?

Trying to understand the universe and how and why we are all here via the existence of a God seems a bit more reasonable than someone believing in something that no one has ever denied wasn't real.

Other than kids and possibly crazy people who has ever denied that the Tooth Fairy was just something we all made up to "reward" kids for growing and losing their baby teeth?
