As far as government spending on healthcare the US is pretty much on par with most Western nations. The problem is we have allowed insurance companies to basically own healthcare in our country so instead of redoing the way we do things we just gave the insurance companies even more power over our healthcare system.

Single payer system would bankrupt this country in less then 5 years. Or they would make payments to Dr's and Hospitals so low that none of them would accept it. To DR's, medicare and Medicaid reimbursements are already at the point where the Dr takes a loss for treating the person.
