Both? I am sure there are judges that would refuse (or have a hard time with) imposing maintenance payments on a woman simply because they are sexist enough to think it doesn't "apply" or some bullshit like that. I am friends with a divorce lawyer here and she represents husbands/fathers and has gotten both child support and maintenance for them in situations where it was warranted. So I know it does happen.

In some states, there are formulas that the courts are bound to use (barring special circumstances) that calculate both child support and maintenance. In those states, I think that it would be much more difficult for a woman to out-earn a man and then argue she shouldn't have to pay maintenance. But in states where it's still discretionary or it's not imposed by statute, judges probably have a lot more leeway to say, "Hey, that little lady shouldn't have to pay money to that MAN." I agree it is sexist and inappropriate.

At the same time, whenever men bitch about child support, I have to laugh. It's your KID. Deal with it. Maintenance, however, is another issue entirely and I think that some women do abuse it (for example, by refusing to get married to long-term boyfriends in order to continue receiving maintenance while also being supported by another man).

Is "maintenance" a PC way of saying alimony or what?

Yeah, but something something physical vs. legal custody, depends on the state...

In theory the man can receive support with primary OR joint custody, not just primary.

"Alimony" is the term used in many states for financial support paid to a ex-spouse after a divorce. In other states the term "alimony" has been replaced with the term "Spousal Maintenance" or "Spousal Support" or "Family Support." The terms, however, are synonymous.

Learn to Google? It's not a "PC" way of doing it; it's the modern legal term for alimony.

Yeah, it's a load of laughs. Nothing quite as fun a losing access to your kids half the time, and paying the woman who broke up the family for the privilege. No matter that she then gets a job at equal salary, and your stuck with the agreement. No matter when her salary exceeded mine once I retired, to actually spend time raising my kids. No matter that she rarely spent money on the kids, clothing, lunch money, insurance, haircuts, medical, or pretty much any other out of pocket expense. Let's laugh at all the men who whine and don't want to support their kids.

Of course I could have gone back to court, and spent thousands more to maybe save a few hundred bucks a month, or maybe just be told by the judge to un-retire, and get back to work and keep on paying! Easier to keep paying.

Yeah, I was never a fan of alimony, and I certainly wasn't fond of reading this, "In most states, fault has no affect on divorce issues such as alimony and spousal maintenance. As a result, in most states, issues such as dating, infidelity or even abuse are not factors considered in determining whether to award spousal maintenance."
