Thread: Speakership

Because these aren't "Republican" problems- they're American problems.

Having said that, I get why they didn't step in and save McCarthy. They weren't mad about him going on air and saying they were the ones blocking passage of the CR (I mean, that's not what they were primarily mad about) they were mad at him once again making deals he had no intention of honoring- this time in the form of a standalone Ukraine funding vote he had promised. And the idiot got up on TV and told everyone that he would give the Democrats zero concessions for supporting his bid as Speaker. This is a topic that has been danced around a lot in the media and among his peers, but McCarthy has a reputation for being genuinely stupid. We saw a lot of that on display over the last few days.

And McCarthy's speakership was going to be increasingly unstable and untenable even if he did survive this last round. That, plus the fact that McCarthy has done some genuinely bad things for the country in capitulation to his most extreme flank, it's hard to imagine someone else being worse for Democrats and the country. So I think Democrats figured things could only go up from here, and that they weren't actually going to be sparing the nation this chaos. Simply delaying it.

Of course, then Jim Jordan raised his hand. Oh and we've got to fund the damn government in fewer than 45 days.

So here we are, rushing towards the brink again. And the Democrats are nowhere to be found and won't be until the last minute.
I think it's a lot less complex than that. The play is that if the seat if vacant there's always the possibility that a group of Republicans might crossover and offer the Democrats something or someone worth voting for. It's a calculated risk that the seat won't move further to the right but even if it does there's still the Senate and White House as a backstop.

Is it likely? No. Is it possible? Sure. As giddy as this thread is about a potential speaker Trump I'd say his nomination would make it more likely.

That being said I agree that the game of chicken with a functioning government is getting tiresome.

Because an office is somehow a threat to Republicans? Is that honestly what you're eluding to?

Yes, thats exactly what I was referring to. The hideaway was going to be the straw that finally broke our republic.

    McCarthy is from California.

Why are people suddenly realizing he is a RINO and more of a friend to the Dems than he ever was to the Conservatives?

I'm glad he has finally decided to not run again for Speaker. Hopefully, now we can get a leader that is more aligned with the Republicans.

Yeah I’m glad it’s finally in the open. The uniparty seniority said Pelosi got the office, but the times are changing.

I’ve always realized what he was and I’m also glad he decided not to run again. That being said, his ousting wasn’t cool & left the House Republicans weak & divided. What happened shouldn’t have, but it did. I do hope the next Speaker is less compromising.

And they only have themselves to blame. I don’t like how they are trying to blame the democrats and everyone else for their own shit storm.

I mostly agree, but it’s pretty fucked up that the Dems voted with him on a 45 day CR & then almost immediately after made an unholy bipartisan alliance with the Freedom Caucus to oust him over some petty imaginary slight. They got rid of a RINO willing to compromise with their party and likely won’t get that with whoever replaces his Speaker position.

He needed the Dems, and said he would not negotiate to save his job. That’s on him. While I applaud him for crossing party lines for 45 days and CR, a one time thing isn’t enough to save his job, especially after what he said.

Dems can now blame republicans for not getting the 12 appr bills passed, drag their feet through the CR and eventually get the omnibus that they would have gotten with McCarthy anyway but with better optics for them. They still have the safeguard of a dem pres and senate. Really there wasn’t much to lose for them unless somehow Trump becomes speaker, which as much as I’d like to see happen I don’t think it will. Wouldn’t be surprised if McHenry was voted in full time.
