Working used to just be a way to either 1. help the family 2. earn your own money 3. learn about life and the necessary skills to help you as an adult.
12-13 - I did farm work and cut tobacco at harvest during the summers to earn money
14-15 - I did HVAC work with a family friend earning very good money
16-18 - I worked as a lifeguard in the summers and sold retail at clothing stores (the 50% off clothes as an employee was fantastic - I was always well dressed)
Was I underage? Sure...
Did I have to work? Not really...
Did I enjoy everything it afforded me as a teenager and the lessons it taught me? Damn straight...

Their sheer moronic thought process that assumes because they weren't personally made to work by their parents that no child is ever forced to work. Children are forced to work to survive, to avoid abuse and to support their household by neglectful parents everyday. Your anecdote, nor stupidly will never change that.
The least we can do is keep labor laws against child labor strict as to make it difficult for parents to abuse their children.
