Minimum wage doesn't work in it's current form.
The minimum wage in California is $14 an hour, but the majority of employers are forced to offer a living wage in their areas to keep employees. The same supply and demand that so many Conservatives tout as the end all of fairness, also applies to a labor market. Simply put, an employer who doesn't offer a fair wage doesn't get employees.

I don't know what turnip truck you rolled off of, but a minimum wage is a protection for workers, not a universal wage that companies can't increase from to attract new hires. Case in point, tiled by a Panda Express in Reno the other day, starting wage is $16-$18 an hour, with AM crew starting at $22 an hour. In a state with a $9.75 an hour minimum wage, local employers have to offer more to attract employees. If they didn't paying a living wage, no one would work for them. This is consistent all across their neighbor California whom you obviously aren't familiar with.

Exactly the reason I am against a federal minimum wage. Like you said, supply and demand will take care of it.

California - current policies are really working out... ROFL...

Like their policies? Move there... stop exporting those shit ideas elsewhere.

Should we adjust it based on cost of living? Perhaps! Or maybe we should let the low income people who live in shitty states with low costs of living reap the same benefits that their rich rulers do? Seems kind of fair to me.
Oddly enough, CA with all it's taxes and high minimum wage also has the most homeless.

As I said, Democrats need to keep people poor so they can threaten to take away handouts at election time.

The only reason why employers don't pay $2 an hour is because of minimum wages, they set an absolute baseline that prevents exploitation. The supply and demand component that increases wages further to attract talent doesn't do away with a need for a minimum wage, but it reinforces its importance and success.

    I disagree.

Nobody is going to work for $2 an hour. The market dictates the value of labor. Notice how that’s working like it should right now in a time where we have a shortage / high demand for low-skill labor? I’m seeing places like restaurants & QSRs with help wanted signs that state starting at $XX per hour (well above minimum wage).

Minimum wage does two bad things:

    1) By setting a minimum wage you are effectively pricing jobs out of existence. Say for instance a high school kid is looking to earn extra money this summer and both the employer & employee are willing to agree on $10 an hour, but minimum wage is set to $12. In this instance the kid may not have a job, or the employer can only afford 4 workers instead of 5.

    2) It directly contributes to inflation. I feel like that one is self explanatory.

I agree. I live in a state where min wage is $7.25. Virtually no one pays $7.25, certainly not the low/no skill employers like McDonalds. In fact I don't think I can find a job that pays $7.25.

Literally the only time in my life where I worked for minimum wage was in high school where I worked 10 hours a week and had no job experience and virtually no skills.

It was kind of odd because I started working a few months before California raised their minimum wage, so after I got my first raise of a whole dime an hour then suddenly my pay went up something like 15 cents due to the minimum wage, and now I was making the same as everyone who started just the day before, even though I had MONTHS of experience!

My son makes $15 an hour working part time at Raising Canes (fast food chicken place). And we live in Texas. And he has to tell them every so often “no I can’t work anymore hours this week” (he is in high school) because they are absolutely desperate for good reliable employees with a good work ethic.

So, companies are forced to pay employees well more than the federal minimum wage because of supply and demand.. but only because the Federal Government said they have to pay above an arbitrary number......

That's not how it works in reality. The minimum wage is a wage you pay unskilled labor to do unskilled labor jobs. These jobs are usually filled by.. you guessed it: unskilled labor.. people with no skills.. that the company must train them to do a good job. Once they get that skill, then they are either given a raise or they leave and find a better paying job down the street.
