Nah, she's actually the worst of my three dogs as far as dental. I brush their teeth once a week, right after their weekly nail grindings, and they get various toys and treats designed to help. And all of them are good for it. Other than my terrier losing a tooth to having it broken when he slipped and fell playing on a concrete floor, the other two dogs' teeth are perfect. No tartar, gleaming white. But Sparta just seems to have the most awful genes imaginable. The other two don't need yearly cleanings but it really helps with Sparta. It's as though she's holding her dry food in her mouth until it becomes mush and then she packs it around her teeth with her tongue for every meal. She's got a few health issues besides that, mostly stemming from her way-too-early spaying (eight weeks, seriously) that the shelter did but we continue to battle it out.

Like I said, though, this is probably her last time being put under for dental cleaning. I'm going to step up her toothbrushing to daily. After every meal if I have to.

Wish I could offer more help or advice. I seriously tried everything with my Saint, but she still ended up needing all her molars and premolars removed. That dog cost me close to $6,000 in dentals alone over 4 years. The only other thing, if it is just a slow recovery from anesthesia, is making sure you monitor liver and kidney enzyme levels. But it really sounds like I'm just preaching to the choir here and you already know this stuff.

My college holding a Locks of Love donation drive. All those people donating their hair have no idea it's more likely to be sold than donated to people in need.

Your response makes me frown unless it was entirely intentional of you to averr that his situation sucks a dude.

I think it's a little unfair to Locks of Love, they do say on their website that they sell shorter and grey hair to offset manufacturing costs. It's still a legitimate charity.

It is a legitimate charity, and they do donate some. Unfortunately they sell more than they donate. There are better options where the hair is more likely to get to someone who needs it.

Copious drooling in a dog that does not normally drool at all, barely being able to shuffle around, unable to focus her eyes, obvious discomfort... It's hard to watch, especially since I'm having a hard time not worrying about the results of her biopsies whenever I look at her. She's never been as quick to recover from anesthesia as the other two dogs but it's never been this bad. If she were vomiting, I'd whip her right over to the emergency vet.

I'm thinking we're going to start skipping the yearly cleaning and just do our best with regular toothbrushing. No more anesthesia for Sparta unless it's imperative.
I think I mentioned before that we adopted an older dog from the shelter earlier this year. He had a badly discolored tooth. It didn't seem to prevent him from eating but we took him to the vet to check it out. He doesn't like being touched around the mouth so the vet sedated him. Luckily it turned out to be just that, a discolored tooth. She did a complete cleaning since he was out anyway and I picked him up a few hours later.

I figured he might need to relieve himself so I stopped at a field and let him out. There is a stream that runs between this vacant field and a nearby soccer field. I guess he was pretty thirsty from the anesthesia and procedure so he wobbled over and went right over the bank and into the water. He stood there and drank for what seemed like ten minutes. Then he just stood at the bottom of the bank and shook. I tried to get him to come to me but he wouldn't or couldn't. I was really starting to get panic stricken. He's a big fucking dog and there was no way I could lift him up the bank on my own so I started shouting at him and calling him a bad dog. I've never raised my voice to him but it did seem to motivate him to clamber up the bank. God I felt terrible though.

And that's my animal anesthesia story.

You don't even raise your voice to animals and you disagree when I call you sweeter than whiskey???
