The U.S. cemented its status as an Empire with Bretton Woods.

It's more... nuanced... this time around, vs the Romans and British.

The U.S. dollar is the world's primary currency, you have McDs (and the like) established globally, every major foreign nation generally mandates English as a second language, etc etc.

Bretton Woods agreement = other nations giving up some of their sovereignty for access to the U.S. market.
