My initial reaction is that it was a good speech. He hit on the important issues and made some bold statements. Good ideas were set forth, whether or not congress carries them through. The focus on jobs, while expected, was refreshing. While the insistance on finishing what was started on health care reform was a relief.
My biggest disappointment was the tarnishing of the call for post-partisanship. I winced a bit every time he took a pot shot at Republicans in between those calls for all members of congress to work together. Despite the fact that I agree with some of those assessments, they simply were not well placed. You cannot ask for people to put party divisions aside and then slam the opposing party.
That said, I'm watching the Republican response now. Thus far most of this speech is an attack. Instead of a few pot shots thrown in between calls for bi-partisanship, it's so far one call for bi-partisanship thrown in between pot shots. It does not signify any desire to move away from partisan politics.
