Thread: Poisoning the Blood

You already know we're getting heavier. Rising obesity rates are as American as apple pie — a cliché that seems freshly relevant in this context. But did you know we're also getting shorter?

We didn't! At least, not until we tried to use the National Health Interview Survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to figure out which professions boast the tallest workers.

The shortest men work on farms, while the shortest women clean. Both professions hire the highest share of immigrant workers for their respective genders. And Americans who were born outside the country tend to be much shorter than folks who were born here — it's one of the biggest height gaps we saw.

The immigrant share of the U.S. workforce has almost doubled since 1994, from 11 percent to 20 percent, according to our analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Could immigration explain American shrinkage?
Don't show this article to Trump! He might draw wrong conclusions.

"They don't like it when I said that -- and I never read 'Mein Kampf.' They said, 'Oh, Hitler said that' - in a much different way. No, they're coming from all over the world. People all over the world," Trump told those at his Iowa event.

Above, Trump claims that he and Hitler came to similar conclusions independently. But how independent was it really?

1990 report: Ivana Trump told her lawyer Donald Trump kept Hitler speeches beside bed

If Trump kept a book of Hitler speeches by his bedside, isn't it likely that he absorbed Hitler's phrases, even if subconsciously, and that's how he started repeatedly using the exact same phrase that Hitler repeatedly used?

Thank goodness! The creator of Godwin's Law says it is okay to talk about Hitler on the internet again. I feel liberated, after having been held in check by this law for years.

From the creator of Godwin's Law..

But when people draw parallels between Donald Trump's 2024 candidacy and Hitler's progression from fringe figure to Great Dictator, we aren't joking. Those of us who hope to preserve our democratic institutions need to underscore the resemblance before we enter the twilight of American democracy.

And that's why Godwin's Law isn't violated — or confirmed — by the Biden reelection campaign's criticism of Trump's increasingly unsubtle messaging. We had the luxury of deriving humor from Hitler and Nazi comparisons when doing so was almost always hyperbole. It's not a luxury we can afford anymore.
