Democrats will probably back off before it gets that far because they realize they will probably lose some of their powers if they push this too far.
It was created because two people were feuding over tax returns and one of them was the Secretary of the Treasury who had the power to look all up in them tax returns, but the other guy couldn't see his. So Congress put an end to that right quick.

The creation of the law was for just as petty reasons as there are right now.

All the more reason the courts would strike that law down, which is why Democrats wouldn't want to go down that road.

I highly doubt they'd strike down a law that removes taxation oversight from the House, Senate, and Joint committees on taxes.

To what end? I'd get it if it was before the election, and was used to shut up people who thought he had financial obligations to foreign countries... but after 2+ years of an unfettered investigation, at this point it's only meant to further degrade him and will have literally no affect on his being president.

At least as far as the president they probably would. Congress has broad oversight powers but not unlimited oversight powers. Democrats would be fools to test this in the courts and watch as their oversight powers diminish.

No, I doubt they'd even do it as far as the President. Checks and balances and all. The President can look at every single one of their tax returns.

Agreed, it's a good law. Generally I agree in disclosing tax returns for presidential candidates, simply to negate or bring to light their financial obligations and ties.

Don't forget the 2020 election. The Democrats know that Trump has a good chance to win a second term (you wouldn't know that by listening to most news networks or late night comedy shows, but it's true). Democrats are looking for anything they can find to try to prevent that from happening.

That is already done and in far greater depth as each nominee is required BY LAW to fill out and submit.

Here's the thing though.. they don't care about that. They want to attempt to find something, anything in the tax returns that will embarrass the President.

    Democrats are desperate.

The real question is why do you care that people want to know if the POTUS has financial debts to foreign governments governments?
