Exclamation Racist Counter-Protest at University of Mississippi

About 30 people gathered on the campus Thursday, protesting Israel’s attacks on Gaza, and demanding the school’s divestment from companies linked to Israel’s military campaign. They were met with hundreds of counter-protesters and more onlookers as students spilled out of their classes to gather to watch the protest that took place behind the J.D. Williams Library. Shortly after the protest, a video of a student making monkey noises and gestures toward a black female protester surfaced and quickly went viral. There were no arrests; however, the protest was shut down after counter-protesters started throwing food, bottles and cups along with insults. Police escorted the protesters off campus to a safe location.

A national fraternity, meanwhile, said it has removed one of its members for “racist actions” at the University of Mississippi as a large group of students heckled a smaller group of pro-Palestinian protesters.

The University of Mississippi opened a conduct investigation Saturday into at least one student after a video went viral showing a group of students harassing a pro-Palestine protester on the campus last week.

Chancellor Glenn Boyce said the counterprotesters’ chants and actions Thursday contained “hostility and racist overtones.” Video showed a group of white men standing across from a lone Black woman participating in the protest, with the men dancing, hooting and chanting. One man mimicked a monkey.

“From yesterday’s demonstration, university leaders are aware that some statements made were offensive, hurtful and unacceptable, including actions that conveyed hostility and racist overtones,” Boyce wrote.

“To be clear, people who say horrible things to people because of who they are will not find shelter or comfort on this campus,” he added.

Since the video surfaced, a slew of campus organizations, including the Ole Miss NAACP branch, called for the student’s expulsion.

“I think this young man should be held accountable every step of the way for his actions; in his career, if it has to go into the afterlife, then that too,” A’Davion Bush, the group’s justice chair, said.

The afterlife? Possibly. What sort of temporal punishment would be appropriate for the monkey-imitating counter-protestor? His fraternity, which is not subject to the First Amendment, promptly kicked him out. Considering its history, this particular university is eager to portray itself in a positive light.

University of Mississippi = Ole Miss

They should burn a cross in his front yard & hang him from a tree!

It’s telling that you would focus on this instead of the positives of counter-protestors holding up the American flag and singing our National Anthem, or the pro-Hamas protestors calling for Intifada, the extermination of Jews, and death to America.

Regardless, I do agree that the monkey-imitation sounds was in bad taste & that such actions should be denounced.

Edit: I’m confident everyone that is not retarded knows the University of Mississippi = Ole Miss. Pointing that out is unnecessary.

I used a distinct subject line to avoid confusing this particular counter-protest with the main thread about the protests.

I don't think you're right about that. Also, pointing out the unnecessary is unnecessary.

You should create another thread to take a poll asking members of the PC if they knew Ole Miss = the University of Mississippi.

Tell you what, Clyder, I'll go ahead and denounce this one person making monkey noises if you denounce the tens of thousands of "protesters" who have been openly calling for the murder of Jews and who have downplayed or defended the mass rape and murder that happened on October 7th.

This is about Israel and Gaza and involves a member of Congress from Mississippi, making this precisely the right thread in which to post it. Below the video is the Congressman's statement in defense of his actions.

Ezell sent a statement to WJTV 12 News about the incident and said, “These China-backed protesters want to harass and intimidate Members of Congress into ending our support for Israel and our opposition to Hamas terrorists. I will not be harassed or intimidated by the Chinese Communist Party, Hamas, or their supporters, and I will continue standing with our Israeli allies against terrorism.”

WJTV 12 News also reached out to Capitol police about the incident. They said they’re looking into the incident.

Good for the Congressman. Clearly he was acting in self defense with a reasonable measured use of force in response to their harassment & intimidation tactics.
