You don't want to change it. You want to abolish it.

There is a reason why we don't want mob rule, aka a true democracy. People can be very intelligent on an individual level. But, as a rule, a group of people is only as smart as it's dumbest member. You can easily see throughout history where people as a whole have believed, and done some incredibly dumb, things that we know aren't true today. And you can easily look around and see how as a whole we still have many of the same failings we had thousands of years ago.
While I do see the point you're making, I would disagree on the majority of cases in saying that it'd be historically accurate. Stupid people will always exist, and they'll always spout stupidity, but saying that everyone just kind of believed them is I think inaccurate. The majority of people in 1492 didn't believe that Christopher Columbus would sail off the edge of the world before hitting India, but stupid people are the loudest, and they get talked about, so history recorded it.
A couple hundred years from now someone will find a cache of youtube videos and think we were all so stoned out of our gourds praising double rainbows that we all thought 9/11 was an inside job to distract us from the government mind control chemtrails. Stupid people are loud, and us commenting on it makes it look relevant and believed from an outside perspective.
