Altruistic thinking has edged out total consumption up to this point in human history there is no reason to think it will discontinue. In the tug of war between the two we are just in a moment where the scales are tipping back a little bit for the few at the expense of the many.

Up to this point in history we have all decided together to implement a government that protects ALL people no matter who they are, where they are from, what their conditions are, or who they love. Or at least tried to. The trajectory of human rights in America and around the world has gradually climbed over the 20th century. We all pitch in so that we all benefit and its worked out pretty well so far.

Americans know that anything they get from our government is not going to be caviar and Rolls Royce's! Thats why I'm not bothered if anyone actually aspires to be on welfare and have sympathy for anyone who has no choice due to luck, condition, or circumstance to have to rely on welfare as their only support. I believe we are all better when we can help each other out even if it is a little bit.

America has become a really great place with its own culture that has blended from cultures from all over the globe. I would love to see us continue down that altruistic and open path we have been following for the 100 years to the point where there is such an abundance for everyone to share that no one would mind if everyone got the same standard of living.

It is redistribution from an imbalance. History shows that human resources were more equitably distributed in the past then gradually squeezed to the top by a few over time. All redistribution is by force it just depends on who is doing the forcing. The wealthy have been forcing it to themselves as they have learned to do.

I disagree with fairness not being included in one of America's greatest accomplishments. Everything else you mention is also partly about how America got to where it is but fairness, compassion, and heart have also played major roles.
