Of course the dates are for the benefit of the companies, doesn’t mean I can’t use the dates as a guide for how old the food is.
With no dates on the food how do we even know if the food we are buying at the store has been sitting on the shelf for 2 weeks or 2 years?

Is this the same as the sell by date or is that completely different?
For things like milk I prefer to just go by the sell by date for my use by expiration. Normally we consume it before then, but it happens sometimes we don’t. I suppose you can do the smell test, but I like dates.
Kraft Mac & Cheese though or those muscle relaxers I was prescribed for a car accident 3 years ago, that best if used by date is merely a suggestion.
