I like best buy dates because they give me an idea if something is still good. Like a couple of days past the best buy date for milk and it's most likely still good, a week or more and it's most likely bad. Same for eggs and similar for things like mayo and cheese.
Stuff like chips I would eat a month or two past the best buy date.
What are people in California going to do now, just guess if the food they have is still good or not?
I also like best buy dates for when I buy food because almost always you can find food that is a month or two fresher than other food of the same type that is on the same shelf. How are stores going to manage all of this? They going to try and sell stuff that has been sitting on the shelf for 1+ years now?
