Attorney General Jeff Sessions is blaming an old foe of his for the opioid crisis: marijuana.

Speaking at the Heritage Foundation to the Reagan Alumni Association this week, Sessions argued that cutting prescriptions for opioid painkillers is crucial to combating the crisis — since some people started on painkillers before moving on to illicit opioids like heroin and fentanyl. But then he expanded his argument to include cannabis.

“The DEA said that a huge percentage of the heroin addiction starts with prescriptions. That may be an exaggerated number; they had it as high as 80 percent,” Sessions said. “We think a lot of this is starting with marijuana and other drugs too.”

Rand made some great points last night. These GOP were railing against President Obama about deficit spending, but now they cheer when they pass the budget with "just" an extra TRILLION dollars in it that we don't have.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions thinks the U.S. could easily combat the growing opioid crisis by taking over-the-counter medications for pain and "tough it out."

"I am operating on the assumption that this country prescribes too many opioids," Sessions said Wednesday as he touted the Trump administration's efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking. "People need to take some aspirin sometimes and tough it out a little."

The problem is, in many cases, he is right. He may be over simplifying the issue and stating it in an insensitive manner, however for decades in the US pain killers have been grossly over prescribed. Much of that is at the behest of a generation of childish pussies that never learned that sometimes life hurts a little and you need to grow tougher. Now, before you scream and yell all over the place, there is a genuine need for real pain management in a lot of cases and there is serious abuse by doctors who just want the cash from the office visit. I do not agree with the lunacy in the effort to combat abuse that has happened requiring drug tests for prescriptions and so on that has driven them up into the thousands of dollars per test range for something no more accurate than the 70-80 dollar test at Walmart other than the fact some lab signed off on it. We also need to spend more time and effort on developing real and effective treatments for addiction instead of the feel good muddling around that so many "treatment" centers do and then charge tens of thousands for the privilege.

OH and to cut off another bullshit answer, legalizing pot isn't going to do it.

Yes, let's discount all the studies that have shown that marijuana is a far safer alternative to opioids and states where it's legal have seen a drop in opioid use and abuse. Why side with science when we have thoughts and prayers?
