They are coming to insulate our upstairs crawl space later this month. The whole situation is a bit frustrating because the roof was completely redone before we bought it, we have the papers and everything. It is less than 2 years old at this point, and we're worried about how extensive the damage is going to be. We don't have a really long ladder, and the back of our roof is pretty much impossible to reach without a really tall one. Not sure what our solution is at this point, but we're trying to figure it out. :( The dripping in the basement is pretty steady at this point, I went down to put laundry in and the puddle has gotten a bit bigger too :| I don't know if I should like, put a bucket under it. The dripping is isolated to around our chimney, which I guess is pretty typical with ice dams.
I wasn't necessarily trying to be negative to her, but she seems to post way more problems than anyone else on these boards.
I think you're reading my posts with a connotation that they don't have. I'm not testy, I'm being completely serious. I am sorry if I offend people, but I'm not (currently) actively trying to annoy anyone. I'm just sharing what happened this morning when we woke up.

Old people like complaining about shit (or so I've heard.) I'm calling you old!
I lose enough heat as it is... adding venting would likely just cause the heating bill to skyrocket even more. I live in a house built in 1769, with an expansion added in 1801. Waxpaper would probably make better walls than what I have.
That diagram is an assumption about an attic space. If you have living space exposed to the inside of the roof, then insulation would need to be ripped out if doing any subsequent work.
I was under the impression Ice Dams occurred typically at the edges of your roof. Sounds like your roofers didn't flash properly around the chimney.
They do.

Because of the way our house is set up, we believe that the water is leaking down through the wall cavities into the basement where the leak is. Our chimney (I don't even know if chimney is the proper term for it because we don't have a fire place but that is the best word I have for it) is toward the back of the basement, maybe two-three feet from the external wall and the bilco doors.
Though, my dad brought up the flashing around the chimney as well, it may be part of the problem but you can see the metal flashing around it and the drip is outside. The chimney itself is completely dry except where the puddle has touched it.
... I took a picture of it but I don't actually know how helpful it is. Hang on. I don't know if it helps to understand what is going on, because I'm bad at explaining.
I don't think those protruding nails have anything to do with anything, pretty sure they just hung stuff all around the basement cause there are like half-hammered in nails in weird places.
