Just because you don't like it doesn't mean he isn't a full time student while working full time. You might look down your nose at him, but you really have no reason to do so. I know that won't stop you, but just saying - just because he isn't going to MIT doesn't mean he isn't busting his ass to better his life and the life of his son. He's doing everything he can and I think that says a lot.
Bob calls my "conditional generosity" "irksome" yet he tells someone it is impossible for them to have an important job or taking important classes if he is going to school and working at the sametime.
Take your 50 dollar an hour job Bob and buy some class.

Having taken some of the same classes as Bob, I am inclined to agree with him that full time employment and full time schooling are binary in nature, under the assumption that an individual is truly seeking maximum success in both areas. There were several classes that I took on both the undergraduate and graduate level that required at least 20 hours per class per week during peak project deliverable times. (GB301 at Bentley was a nightmare before it got nerfed in 2008)
On the graduate level, these numbers were even worse... I remember one project necessitated four 12 hour days of work with a team of 5 to deliver a project complete and on time. When the teams presented their projects, there was a clear delineation between the full time students and the full time employed with the quality, completeness, and attention to detail. Grades reflected this effort as well, of course.
Given the high time requirements of both of these options, it becomes a question of allocation of a limited resource: Time. With the demands of both of these being so high, there are limited alternative areas to draw upon this resource. Sleep? No... that would effect both adversely. Internet/Gemstone? Potentially... but not apparent if still actively posting on these forums. Family? No, it was stated explicitly that family time was not being sacrificed to meet this end. I'm not quite sure what else is left to draw upon in order to deliver fully on these two requirements.
Bob's statements were logical, given the conditions handed to him, and he's right to question some of the conditions, and question the subjective nature of someone declaring they have an 'important' job and 'important' classes.
However, with all that being said, it's still important, as Diethx said, that the intent for the reallocation is a admirable one, even if the math doesn't logically make sense yet.
