Local news has some silliness about some girl who got into an argument with her teacher over not standing for the pledge of allegiance. It's half a story, and the school can't legally tell their version. But that's not the story.
About fifty yahoos have posted how it's disrespectful to the veterans that this kid wouldn't stand and recite. They're getting it utterly backwards.

People still get offended over whether or not a kid says the pledge of allegiance?

This surprises you?
I'm guessing you probably think this is where I'll go all gung-ho, and talk about how this kid and her parents are obvious Communists that need to be locked away in a camp somewhere...
Quite the opposite. Although I grew up with it myself, I don't think the Pledge of Allegiance has any place in public school. If you want to raise your children to be good little Americans, that's all you...make them say the pledge before they get their processed breakfast-food-stuffs in your home. When they're at school, they need to be doing school activities.

I see nothing wrong with school teaching our children the mechanics of our system.
That's a fair different sort from forcing them to recite brainwashing rhetoric.

Too true.
The worst part about that is, we're not allowed to call bullshit. Doing so draws the wrath.

Google Hitler Youth.
We're not there, but only due diligence will keep us from ever being there again. Parallels can be drawn...swap some words around...the core remains...blind adherence to any maxim is dangerous. History proves this time and again.

Children are encouraged to report suspicious persons to the government, and some even denounce their parents. Surveillance controls the citizenry and the smallest sign of rebellion, even something so small as a facial expression, can result in immediate arrest and imprisonment. Thus, citizens (and particularly party members) are compelled to obedience.

The average American is functionally retarded. All knee jerk reaction and no thought. Just the way our government wants them. And yes, they died blindly for totalitarianism. This is why I don't respect them. Any idiot can hold a weapon and scream murica. Look at gelston.

It's why I don't respect my service and am not proud of that portion of my life, yes. I believed the lie at that time, as so many do at that age.

This might be weird, but I'm going to be nice to you for a change. Your service, was for the right of Americans to be knee jerk reactionaries if that's their thing, as well as people who share your views on government. The country is strong enough to survive a whole bunch of dissenting viewpoints, without the armed services the whole menagerie wouldn't last long in the world. I don't need to know any specifics, but don't feel bad about doing hard things that needed to be done.

He isn't the first veteran to feel unfulfilled at the end of his service. Whatever the opposite of rose-colored glasses are, he's set them upon his nose. Extremes either way are always dangerous, and rarely the truth.

I try to avoid politics typically,
The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth's Companion on September 8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country.
Founders design was doing just fine without the pledge.
Grew up with it, did my 25 years in service, do not mind it. But, children need to understand it is a choice.

Yeah. "Under God" was added by the Knights of Columbus in the 1950's to "fight Communism."

I did up to middle school (private) but didn't do it in high school. I think we still did it before games or assemblies, but there were people who didn't stand and nobody really cared.

We'd have the anthem before games. Yeah though, no pledge in middle school at all. We watched Channel 1 News every morning though.
