I was wondering when this would happen.

Obama will be challenged to find someone who agrees with him from the military. His ego just can't take being criticized or disagreed with - good luck finding someone with any real military background who does that.

It's a civilian position.

It's a civilian position.

It is a civilian position, but it generally helps to have military experience. Still, there have been 6 holders that never served. The most recent being William Cohen under Clinton, and Dick Cheney under H.W. Bush.

True. Not all who served though served extensively. Leon Panetta was only in the army for 2 years.

The two people purported to be in the running were never in the military. Ash Carter and Michèle Flournoy.

They've both been working in or around the DoD for decades though, albeit, in civilian positions.

Hell, Ashton Carter used to be the #2 guy in the DoD, Flournoy was a #3.

Yes, but more importantly, will whoever wins be required to interact with pc's in GS4 while scripting? I sure hope not. It's an important issue and no one is talking about it.

Last I heard, someone attached a rider to the proposed legislation that mandates SIMU spend at least 10% of their GS related income on GS marketing endeavors.

I would like to see some higher ups in the Pentagon resign in protest over Obama's bungling of military matters and foreign policy.

This blurb from FP nails it.

Hagel was not dismissed because he embodied a strategy that the White House wished to change. The White House continues to cling to the notion that it is doing everything right, and that what its strategy requires is minor tweaks, not a massive overhaul. Rather, Hagel was dismissed in order to protect those who really have been in charge of formulating a national security strategy that has been a dismal failure, namely, the handful of individuals who constitute the inner circle of presidential advisors. These are the people who are responsible for the premature withdrawal from Iraq; the premature announcement of a withdrawal from Afghanistan; the unfulfilled promise of the pivot to Asia; the red line on Syria that wasn't; the confused response to Putin's aggression in Ukraine and to the rise of the Islamic State.

From the Associated Press: “On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson became the latest to tell the White House he wasn't interested in [becoming Defense Secretary], according to people familiar with the process. Johnson's decision to stay put at DHS is likely to deepen the impression that the Pentagon post - typically a highly sought-after Cabinet spot -is drawing little interest.”

He has a good haircut. He'll be confirmed. Haircuts will be the determining factor for Obama's nominees for the remainder of his term. You'll see. People with Republican haircuts will be confirmed.

Carter has degrees in physics and medieval history (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/03/us/politics/ashton-carter-may-replace-chuck-hagel-at-defense-department-official-says.html), both of which will be useful for a Secretary of Defense.
