They won't be the only team do that this year. One of the reasons college football sucks; ranked teams play nobodies. They're gimmie wins.

There's a difference between unranked and being a nobody. I don't feel like explaining what that difference is at this time however. I'm like fuck the NCAA and college sports though, so I'm a bit biased.

South Carolina is probably going to pull a Florida this year. Poor Sir Big Spurs. Spurrier will probably have no less than 50 heart attacks on the sidelines, but not realize it because he is too busy tossing his visor at the ground.
Texas A&M's win is a lot less impressive when you see how SC played E Carolina.

Damn, Ohio State dropped to 22. Maybe they'll lose another game and get dropped off the rankings. That would be fun.

So the ND v. UM game was so perfect, I may never watch another CFB game.
After losing 4 out of 5 games in fluky fashion (and never hearing the end of it from UM fans, who wouldn't admit those games were toss-ups and they wound up on the winning side), ND wins 31*-0.
Why the asterisk? Well, because ND actually ran an INT back for a TD on the last play of the game, but it was called back for an illegal block.
I ain't even mad, though, because the illegal block was the best part of the game. An incredible punctuation to an outstanding game.

I'd be fine with that.
That would mean we'd beat FSU, USC, Stanford, UNC, ASU, and a top 4 team in the semis. If we got blown out in the championship game, it would have been an incredible year, something LSU hasn't experienced in a while.

Yep, UM played atrociously bad.
Brady Hoke needs to fix his facial expression of being utterly stupefied.
Great recruiter, but does not seem able to put together comprehensive game plans ... relying on UM players to 'wing it for victory' as in the past few years against ND were.

You can't block downfield prior to the ball being touched by a receiver. The other guy on the field was past the line of scrimmage and made zero effort to run a route. He blocked all the way, and because he was past the line, the flag was thrown. Good call. Ballsy call at the time, but it was the right call.

I had no sound, but do you think it was pass interference or should it have been a different call?
I just did not see pass interference at all... Which is what the TV said the foul was. Looked like a clean TD to me.
I still think those fags at ND were robbed.
Palcron
10-19-2014, 01:13 AM
The issue was that he blocked the defender past the line of scrimmage prior to the receiver catching the ball. Technically, that qualifies as an offensive pass interference penalty. You can't block past the line before someone touches a thrown ball, and he blocked the guy a few yards deep into the end zone.
It wasn't the guy who caught the ball that was penalized, but the guy next to him who blocked the would-be defender into the end zone prior to the ball being caught. Had the dude stayed behind the line while blocking or initiated the block after the ball was caught, it would have been a likely TD, but he did neither.

Watch ND #20 against FSU #8. It was a holding pick. It's why Robinson was so wide open.
It wasn't a tough call to make.

It was a sloppy move by Prosise who was supposed to make it look like he was running a route and oopsie, the FSU guy ran into me. He didn't have to literally block him, all he had to do was hit him just enough to give Robinson an extra step.

First, the PI was on #20, who was engaged by the FSU defender.
Second, #7 is running an inside slant route. The defender takes inside leverage and #7 runs into him.
The shitty part is that the CB covering #88 would have never gotten to him even without the contact between the two other pairs of players.
We ran the same play in the first half and Jimbo complained to the refs that we had picked their defender. Smart coaching move on his part to get it into the refs head.

My brother in law was over last night.. complaining about the call. I was like "Are you a ND fan.. because the only people complaining about how bad the call was is ND fans." He attempted to claim impartiality..saying he just started liking NCAA football this year and that he doesn't have a favorite team... and that really convinced me up until his wife walked in, hearing us talking about the game and said "Yea, we were absolutely robbed by that terrible call!"

Advise them to cut bait while they can. ND is not a school I'd choose to start rooting for.
As far as the PI - it was at best a questionable call and at worst not pass interference.
The ACC today admitted their officials missed a personal foul penalty on the FSU DB that took his helmet off to scream at a ref until he threw his flag for that PI. So it should have bee 1st and Goal at the 8 with 13 seconds.
It's all moot - but you can understand how ND fans are salty.

At best it was the right call and at worst you get upset ND fans crying about it.

If they called the personal foul.. it would have simply offset the pass interference call and the down would have been replayed. 3rd and goal.
It's all moot - but you can understand how ND fans are salty.
They are salty indeed.. their receivers really need to learn how to set 'legal' picks. It was a sloppy play by 2 of their receivers that they didn't need to do... they honestly looked like they were blocking downfield, which is the exact opposite what you want that play to look like. It's supposed to look as though the defense interfered with their route.. not that the receiver is blocking the defense.
FSU didn't even play D correctly in that scenario and Robinson would have scored regardless.
Keller
10-21-2014, 02:02 PM
The personal foul was after the play. FSU would have accepted the OPI (or we'd have won) and we would have accepted the PF. It would have been first and goal at the 8.
Turns out the penalty was called on Will Fuller (#7, the wide receiver in the bunch set), which makes even less sense than #20.
Here is a good angle that you can clearly see (i) Fuller takes a jab step right and runs a slant while (ii) Darby plays inside leverage and engages Fuller.
http://www.ndinsider.com/multimedia/videos/video-end-zone-view-of-controversial-notre-dame-penalty/video_84f27a20-57e2-11e4-8871-0017a43b2370.html
Not sure how a rational, fair-minded person could watch that and think it was clearly OPI. It's a judgment call, and I can live with a ref calling that play in the moment, but I just don't believe you could say it was anything more than a questionable call.
Palcron
10-21-2014, 02:18 PM
Who it got called on is largely irrelevant when it was a call that clearly needed to be made. Refs accidentally call out wrong jersey numbers on a regular enough basis that that should not be the angle that you attack. It was an obvious block prior to the receiver catching the ball. The FSU player getting blocked was pushed two yards deep in the end zone before the ball was caught. That is the definition of the rule. The receiver made absolutely zero attempt to run a route. It was a pick play all the way.
Palcron
10-21-2014, 02:20 PM
And yes, had the guy not committed an obvious pass interference penalty, FSU had, in fact, screwed up coverage, and it would be been an almost certain TD.

Let me be absolutely clear - neither #20 nor #7 committed offensive pass interference.
#7 was interferred with, if anything.
#20 was running a button route and was jammed at the line. He was fighting for position.
No FSU CB was "two yards deep in the end zone before the ball was caught." When you make objectively false statements, it is clear you don't actually know what you're talking about.
Palcron
10-21-2014, 02:33 PM
Watch #20 for ND block #8 of FSU into the end zone. Prior to the pass being caught, they are both two yards deep into the end zone. That is offensive pass interference. At no point did he attempt to get past #8 to run a route. He never once turned around to look for a pass or put his arms up. Nothing. He just blocked.

If Notre Dame would just join a conference like every other team in college, they could still finish the season with one loss, win a conference title (assuming they joined s conference with a title game) and easily qualify for the playoffs. Without a title game, it's going to be tough, but it's not like losing to the number 2 team in the country destroys your season. There's still a ton of football to be played.
And that one call didn't end the game. They got another shot and threw a pick, so it wasn't the penalty that did them in, rather, it was defensive pressure and a poorly thrown ball.

A one-loss ND team, with Ws over Stanford, ASU, USC, and Louisville, with their loss being to FSU on the road, will make a 4 team playoff. The committee does not have the same SEC bias that the voters have. They can tell that the SEC is down this year and won't give anyone outside of the conference champion a spot.
Assuming ND wins out, it's going to be FSU, SEC champ, ND, and probably OSU, MSU, or Oregon.

Two things.
First, ESPN is wrong.
Second, ESPN has TV deals with the ACC and the SEC. ND has a TV deal with NBC. ESPN is in bed with the ACC and SEC - not with ND. To the extent ESPN praises ND, it is against their economic interests so you can rest assured it is without bias.

They were #1 at the beginning of the year because of returning talent from the previous season. They won the championship last year and have a Heisman winning QB.. so I imagine they would start off pretty high. Top 5 for sure.

Notre Dame: After Saturday's ugly 55-31 loss at No. 9 Arizona State, in which the Fighting Irish trailed 34-3 and then gave up 21 points in the final 4½ minutes after making it close, it's safe to eliminate them from playoff consideration. Before losing to the Sun Devils, the Irish were hanging their hats on a 31-27 loss at defending national champion Florida State on Oct. 18. You can't make the playoff because of a quality loss. The Irish don't have a single victory over an opponent that's currently ranked in the top 25 by the selection committee, and they won't face a ranked foe in their final three regular-season games.
So will be *zero* quality wins for ND.

Your mistake is that I don't care. I never thought they'd be good this year and never defended them when they shit the bed.
Since Mississippi State was named the best team in the country, it was clear that the SEC was underratedly overrated. I have been saying that for weeks to the chagrin of the SEC fans (dap to RC, who is a real CFB fan and not a conference shill). Now ESPN, the SEC's mouthpiece, agrees with me.

Okay. Because college sports weren't the original sporting events. No idea what you are getting at, buddy. NCAA Football FBS went to a play off schedule because people bitched about the match ups. It didn't add any new games. If you are complaining about a "money grab" that is something that has existed since ancient Greece. If you'd like, I can point you toward archaeological evidence.
And they get college scholarships. They get free room and board. How many people are in debt due to student loans right now?

I agree for the most part here, and I know that NCAA marketing has been forced to change. However, in the past, the NCAA basically claimed ownership of players' names and made ungodly amounts of money off of them with absolutely no compensation to the players, unless you consider the scholarships all encompassing compensation.

I've got no problem with that. I do have problems with universities paying a salary to their student athletes as it would essentially destroy college sports.

Post-game thoughts - great game. I hope you and WB see now why I think ND has legit championship hope next year when they are healthy and have the suspended players back. We lose 2 starters and return everyone else.
I wouldn't be surprised to see both ND and LSU in the playoffs next year. Fournette is only going to get better, and you've similarly got a young, talented nucleus.
