View Full Version : Six Californias?

If California splits into six states, as Certain People want it to, who would benefit politically? Since California generally votes for Democrats, most people think it would benefit Republicans the most. But let's not forget that each state gets two electoral votes just for being a state in addition to the number of votes based on population. That would be ten extra electoral votes.
For the past few months, a tech billionaire has been promoting a "Six Californias" plan to break up California into, well, six states. And on Monday, he said he had collected enough signatures to put the plan up for a statewide vote in 2016. So what, exactly, does the plan entail? What are its implications? And does it have any real chance of becoming law?

One California is not enough!

Would that be...
1. State of Silicon Valley
2. State of Northern California
3. State of Death Valley
4. State of North-west Mexico
5. State of North-east Mexico
6. State of On the border Mexico
Just playing.... before someone starts saying I hate Mexicans.

They're going in the wrong direction. Cali should be its own country.

The Valley would be just the opposite. It'd be an interesting split.

Something we agree on.

Don't worry. I happen to think you should have your own country too.

Wow, another thing we agree on. The Midwest would become the most powerfull nation in the world.

It'd be my second favorite country after the South.

Alaska.
I've never been. I have a friend who fishes for salmon up there and quite likes it though.

Interesting plan that just isn't going to happen.

Yeah. Both this and the Texas division are totally unlikely.

Must be a pretty safe place without fresh fruit.

Yup, corn and soybeans (hopefully soon to be replaced by hemp) as far as they eye can see. Want to come over and break boards in my garage?

If I had my choice I would live in Tennessee, but the job market there is not very good, at least not down Chatanooga way.

If you assume all six of the new states follow California's liberal leaning then huge advantage towards the Left. Each state gets two senators. Senate would likely stay Democrat for a long long time.

Which California would be the one to claim the Governator as part of their history? Good god, please be one of the five sections I don't live in.

It would likely be a pretty even split actually. Lots of California is red, but they get swept aside because of the metropolitan areas.

I'll take your word for it. I don't know how California's voting breaks up, that's why I prefaced my comment with "If you assume all six of the new states follow California's liberal leaning then huge advantage towards the Left"
My concern would be that there's some sort of gerrymandering going on.

Which is the main driver in this push.

The Constitution requires state Legislatures to consent. Don't see the CA legislature going along.

The Valley would be just the opposite. It'd be an interesting split. As we learned in the docudrama Veronica Mars, this kind of incorporation and leaving the less fortunate/desirable to fend for themselves never works in the long run. Do you want to live in a country where job creators get their planes blown up for the minor transgression of decades of child rape? Typical liberal.
