According to a new study from Pew Research, Republicans and Democrats in Congress aren’t the only partisans who deeply distrust people from the other side of the aisle. Liberals and conservatives prefer to associate with and live near their fellow partisans. They would be unhappy if their children married someone with a different political viewpoint. The result isn’t just polarized politics, but a divided society where liberals and conservatives increasingly keep apart.
More... (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/12/upshot/polarization-is-dividing-american-society-not-just-politics.html)
If our current political divide were geographic, then we'd be in trouble. Oh, wait..

It used to be, people liked socializing with others that have their morals and similar interests. That could be politics, it could be family values, it could be recreational activities.
We need to stop fucking pigeonholing people as "liberal" or "conservative". This shit is getting out of hand. It is absurd if you aren't a friend to someone just because they are "liberal" or "conservative". People are so much more than what the media is trying to divide us into.

I'm a little skeptical of any analysis that claims a leftward shift in 2004. I'm comfortable claiming Bush was a centrist, but he certainly wasn't a lefty. I also wonder if rather than seeing any unusual polarization we're merely seeing the last rumblings of the Southern strategy, the last pre Civil Rights Act Democrats simply dying out and vice versa. Previous bipartisan cooperation was thus only ever an illusion.

Agree Latrin... I'm not smart enough to analyze it all, so I just try to research as much as possible and read varying viewpoints. This might seem weird, as technology is a fantastic thing in so many ways, but you talk to most 15-25 year olds these days, and life seems to literally revolve around social media. That is just my perception, so I know not the most in depth viewpoint, but it just seems like people truly think that #'tagging something is their way to solve a problem.
I need to research some, but I really wonder what the number of people that volunteer, join habitat for humanity, join the peace corps, study the fundamentals at higher levels (math, science, history, linguistics), are physically active (not obese); or similar such activities that improve society/development.... from lets say 1970? to now.
I just sense that many in our Nation don't perceive the world as it is, but more as they think it should be.
**Caveat - There are a lot of amazing people in the younger generation. I'm just speaking to, what seems to me, the majority/trend that our Nation is headed.

They actually tend towards higher participation in that stuff than we do. "Kids these days!" is eternal though.

Of course every generation says that WB! :)
Mind providing me some links with that information. Really am interested to see.
So if they're more socially active, what about the rest? Is it just a result of people being dumber/less educated these days then? Statistics seem to validate that trend at least. Just one article, but plenty out there. http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/12/03/248329823/u-s-high-school-students-slide-in-math-reading-science
***Oh.. and you say "higher participation in stuff than we do". Do you mean "we" at our current ages? People our age have responsibilities, so that would be an unfair comparison. Guess I was trying to say in 1970, ages 15-25 year olds what were the stats.... and in 2014, ages 15-25 year olds what are the stats. Hopefully I cleared up my unclear statement.

Could not agree more. America was built on acceptance, freedom, and toleration.
We should not fight each other. We should shout out those who want us to fight.

Over time we've actually mostly remained the same on that educational stuff. It makes all reform movements seem pretty silly.
This is from Bush 1's assistant education secretary.

Effectively they donate/do social stuff at higher amounts than we did at their age. Their on the ground numbers are down, but only by like 5%, which is a lot less than you'd expect from all the "OMG MILLENIALS ARE AWFUL" posts.

Sweet.. Thanks for the links. I'll keep reading up some more and educate myself better on this subject. Guess my "perceptions" really are me just becoming an old person then. :)

What kind of question is "Would you let your daughter marry a Democrat?" Only a conservative, brainless, religious fuckhole would ask that question. Poor ClydeR clearly wishes he was born a Muslim so he could enforce Sharia Law and stone and rape his children if they make their own choices. What a fucking idiot.
