The great battle of 2014 will be..

drum roll ..

carbon emission regulations for existing coal power plants.

Speaking in his weekly radio address Saturday, President Obama argued that an upcoming rule to curb carbon emissions from existing power plants will improve public health and protect the planet for future generations.

Obama did not divulge the details of the proposed regulation, which the Environmental Protection Agency will release Monday. But he touted one specific benefit, saying, “in just the first year that these standards go into effect, up to 100,000 asthma attacks and 2,100 heart attacks will be avoided — and those numbers will go up from there.”

More... (http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/obama-lends-support-to-epas-upcoming-power-plant-rule/2014/05/31/7a74efbc-e85a-11e3-8f90-73e071f3d637_story.html)

“Today, about 40 percent of America’s carbon pollution comes from power plants. But right now, there are no national limits to the amount of carbon pollution that existing plants can pump into the air we breathe. None,” Obama said. “We limit the amount of toxic chemicals like mercury, sulfur, and arsenic that power plants put in our air and water. But they can dump unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into the air. It’s not smart, it’s not safe and it doesn’t make sense.”

The proposal has already drawn criticism from Republicans, the coal industry and some business groups on the grounds that it will shutter coal-fired power plants that provide cheap electricity.

Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) said in the Republican weekly radio address that the EPA’s approach would exact too high an economic toll. “We all want clean air and clean water,” he said. “We don’t want costly regulations that make little or no difference, that are making things less affordable. Republicans want electricity and gas when you need it, at a price you can afford.”

You probably think I'm overestimating how big a fight this will be. We'll see.

Will it be bigger than this fight?

Everyone should be willing to spend some extra money on their electric bill for the good of the planet. This is a fight that needs to be fought. The science is settled and the debate is over because consensus has been reached about global warming.

I'm sure there are lots of illiterate rednecks who would disagree with you on that point. That's not saying much, though.

The illiterate rednecks are beginning to feel it too. Those good old boys who want the coal jobs have begun complaining about mountaintop removal. They're caught between a rock and a hard place. Their party doesn't want any regulation because "freedom" so now they can't drink the water.

1. The climate on the planet is always changing. That's why they no longer say "global warming", because they can claim any weather, or ecological phenomenon, is "climate change".

2. There is a difference between man made climate change, and pollution. Steps to reduce pollution is one thing, it is a whole other thing to destroy the economic stability and standard of living currently afforded society, based upon unproven theoretical mathematical theorems defining "climate change" based upon human impact.

3. I'm all for reducing pollution, but the vicious restrictions that are so quickly imposed on the current energy infrastructure is and will be debilitating. This will affect the economy even more starting a large circle jerk of stagnation.

4. Everyone that promotes and defends "we must do everything to stop climate change!!!"; log off your computer, turn off all of your lights right now, light a candle, stop using plastic products, install a wood burning stove in your home for cold nights, sell your car, and get rid of your internet. When you do that, I might actually believe you care about the environment, otherwise you are a hypocrite.

Like water off a duck's back. That said, I don't deny being an expert in recognizing retardation. My expertise permits me to diagnose you as an idiot in the technical sense. In more modern terminology, you exhibit profound mental retardation and definite feeble-mindedness. You should aspire to being merely "dull". I want to remain PC, so let's just call you "learning disabled".

1. The climate on the planet is always changing. That's why they no longer say "global warming", because they can claim any weather, or ecological phenomenon, is "climate change".

Incorrect. See NASA's--of the Bush administration's era--opinion on the subject:
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/climate_by_any_other_name.html

2. There is a difference between man made climate change, and pollution. Steps to reduce pollution is one thing, it is a whole other thing to destroy the economic stability and standard of living currently afforded society, based upon unproven theoretical mathematical theorems defining "climate change" based upon human impact.

Your characterization of climate change science being based upon "unproven theoretical mathematical theorems" is merely rooted in your own misunderstanding of climate science. At this point, there's no disagreement that warming is occurring, and that it is--at least in part--anthropogenic. The only debate, now, is how strong the anthropogenic impact is, and exactly what will happen as a result.

Likewise, your characterization of our needing to take steps as leading to "destruction of economic stability" is likewise based on your willful ignorance--it isn't necessary to "destroy the economy" to mitigate our impact on the climate, and the alternative--doing nothing, or not enough--will lead to at least equally, and at most, destructive consequences that you claim to want to avoid.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Nobody claimed that getting off fossil fuels would be without pains, but again--the crisis we're facing justifies action. And whatever hypocrisy you see in those who advocate government-mandated change, when used as a basis to reject their position--is a fallacious tu quoque argument. The people making the argument could be the biggest hypocrites in the world, and it wouldn't change the science one bit.

Mitch McConnell and John Boehner finished reading and understanding the new 645 page EPA regulation (http://www2.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2014-05/documents/20140602proposal-cleanpowerplan.pdf) just minutes after it was released.

McConnell said (http://www.businessinsider.com/mitch-mcconnell-on-2014-6) the new reg is a "a dagger in the heart of the American middle class, and to representative Democracy itself."

Boehner said (http://www.speaker.gov/press-release/speaker-boehner-president-s-new-national-energy-tax), "The president’s plan is nuts, there’s really no more succinct way to describe it."

Contrary to what Boehner said, I wonder if there is a way to combine McConnell's and Boehner's statements into a single statement that is more succinct? :)
