MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Gov. Nikki Haley has called for an end to a Memorial Day bike rally in the Myrtle Beach area after the shooting deaths of three people.

Haley said after a meeting with area leaders on Friday that the string of deadly shootings was not a problem with law enforcement but an issue with the Atlantic Beach Bikefest event itself, which attracts mainly black bikers.

What's the event all about?

Black Bike Week, also called Atlantic Beach Bikefest[2] and Black Bikers Week,[1] is an annual motorcycle rally in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area, held on Memorial Day weekend. It is also sometimes called Black Fill-in-the-Blank Week, because it has evolved to attract many non-motorcycling visitors who come for music, socializing and enjoying the beach.[5] Events include motorcycle racing, concerts, parties, and street festivals. Called a "a one-of-a-kind event" and "an exhibitionist's paradise" by Jeffrey Gettleman, Black Bike Week is "all about riding, styling and profiling," in the words of Mayor Irene Armstrong of Atlantic Beach, South Carolina.[6]

It is the largest African American motorcycle rally in the US.[5] Attendance has been variously reported as 350,000,[1] 375,000,[5] and as high as 400,000.[3][6] It is considered the third or fourth largest motorcycle rally in the United States.[1] Around 10–15 percent of motorcyclists in the US are women,[7][8] while at major African American motorcycle rallies, such as Black Bike Week or the National Bikers Roundup, women make up close to half of participants.[9]

South Carolina has been trying to shut down the event since at least the 60s, as you can see in this 1969 NAACP press release (http://www.naacp.org/press/entry/-do-the-right-thing--naacp-launches-5th-operation-bike-week-justice--monitoring-continues). In the distant past, the city passed all sorts of laws aimed directly at making the event unpleasant, some of which were found to be unconstitutional.

I was starting to think Nikki Haley was an amateur, but now I think she may just be tough enough to fulfill her ultimate goal of being the Republican nominee for president in the future.

This has nothing to do with any shootings. This is all about a white southern individual being racist against a minority.

Can you say "Recall"?

I wonder the number of fatal shootings at Sturgus each year. There has to be some. Granted, Sturgus is a shit hole. Might not be an issue if it was held in a different, less populated area.

There is nothing racist about this. Gov. Haley did not make any mention of race, the writer of the article added the idea, noting that it is mainly an event with blacks. If you actually research local news reports and the number of violent incidents that occurred over a 48-72 hour period, any reasonable person would listen to the residents of one of their cities and take that into consideration.

Listen to the police chiefs interview and in the article notice the "(comma) which attracts mainly black bikers". The author of the article decided to point that out and make it a race issue.

Bad people did bad things in a neighborhood, in a very short time, endangering citizens in the area. Take color out of it and it seems pretty straightforward to consider not allowing the event to occur in that location.

But of course all the race baiters will say it's racist anyways, just because it "attracts mainly black bikers".

If Gov. Haley is racist, I guess the officials in Panama City, Fl. are too. Oh wait.. that's mainly white people in the picture, guess they just care about their community.
