View Full Version : Net Neutrality Moves Forward!

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday voted in favor of advancing a proposal that could dramatically reshape the way consumers experience the Internet, opening the possibility of Internet service providers charging Web sites for higher-quality delivery of their content to American consumers.
The plan, approved in a three-to-two vote along party lines, could unleash a new economy on the Web where an Internet service provider such as Verizon would charge a Web site such as Netflix for the guarantee of flawless video streaming.
The proposal is not a final rule, but the vote on Thursday is a significant step forward on a controversial idea that has invited fierce opposition from consumer advocates, Silicon Valley heavyweights, and Democratic lawmakers. The FCC will now open the proposal to a total 120 days of public comment. Final rules, aimed for the end of the year, could be rewritten after the agency reviews the public comments.
After weeks of public outcry over the proposal, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said the agency would not allow for unfair, or "commercially unreasonable," business practices. He wouldn't accept, for instance, practices that leave a consumer with slower downloads of some Web sites than what the consumer paid for from their Internet service provider.
He said his plan asks whether paid prioritization should be banned outright, but he still moved forward with a proposal allowing new business arrangements between Internet service providers--such a AT&T, Verizon and Time Warner Cable--and Web content providers, such as Facebook, Google and online startups.
"There is one Internet. It must be fast, it must be robust, and it must be open," Wheeler said. "The prospect of a gatekeeper choosing winners and losers on the Internet is unacceptable."

Eh. Kind of a lame trolling attempt. Most of the alliances in the battle for net neutrality have been between Democrats and Tea Party Members/Libertarians. And one of the biggest foes of net neutrality is that moron Harry Reid, who sort of happens to be a somewhat important Democrat.
It's more an authority versus liberty battle. Establishment Republicans and sold out Democrats versus everybody else.

FCC vote was 3-2 with dems in the majority. Sucks.

That said, there's still 120 days till it's finalized. Time still to shoot off an email or three.

LOL so fucking dumb. Democratic Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, "I don't understand it, but I voted yes anyways." is pretty much what she said in that.

Unfortunately yes. My cousin was at a Harry Reid town hall meeting and confronted him about how being anti net neutrality would crush small businesses like his. Reid basically told him that "Big businesses are more important." and cut him off.

That's an example of the Oligarchy. Even if 95% of us are against monkeying with connection speeds they'll still do it if the big players think they can make a buck off of it.

Unfortunately, we the people haven't been in control for a very long time. But they graciously allow us to think we are.

I can't help but see the parallels in this net neutrality and the 1%er type of debates.
What's being proposed is that if you can pay for faster service you get the opportunity to. It's completely capitalist but we've got 3 dems on the FCC for it and the GOP against it.

Okay Authoritarian. You support those other two things too.I support preventing those mistakes and holding those who intentionally commit them accountable. Authoritarianism is like socialism, you can't assume that all the people you put in the bin agree with each other.

I was only 15 in 2000, but for the record we would know whether Bush lied if we had had universal surveillance then. And there wouldn't have been a 9/11 to sort of link to Iraq in the first place.

I'm safe for the 200 election. I wasn't old enough to vote back then. LOL
I'm worried about Back when he reads this though. I'm probably in for an ass chewing.

Damn, why would the Democrats do this.
Don't they know Al Gore invented the internet?
Though in seriousness, this is fucked up. Why do Americans think the whole world is within its borders. Screwing with network neutrality will definitely cause problems.

Sheer idiocy. Screwing with net neutrality goes against things both parties claim to stand for. But all the corporate money sure is appealing to politicians though.

John Olliver crashed the FCC computers with his net neutrality bit.
"What's being proposed is so egregious that activists and corporations have been forced onto the same side. And you might wonder, if everyone is against this, how is it even possibly happening? ... The guy who used to run with the cable industry's lobbying arm is now tasked with the agency tasked with regulating it. That is the equivalent of needing a babysitter and hiring a dingo."
The current commenting period (http://www.fcc.gov/comments) runs through June 27.
