HIGHLIGHTS:

Dubbed ‘Plan B’ the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has looked at the possibility of sucking carbon dioxide out of the air and reflecting sunlight into space.

It has been proposed that a dust cloud made of Moon or asteroid dust could be created around the Earth to block solar radiation

In 2012 scientists at the University of Strathclyde suggested capturing an asteroid and dragging it into the Langrange Point – halfway between the Earth and the Moon – where it would create a stream of dust surrounding the Earth and blocking out the Sun.

They suggested using 1036 Ganymed which would create a cloud of around 2,600km wide.
However the scientists admitted that a miscalculation could cause 1036 Ganymed to hit the Earth, which would end human civilization and most of life on the planet.

In a 2007 paper Curtis Struck of Iowa State University proposed that mining on the Moon would throw up a cloud of dust for decades which could protect the Earth from solar radiation.

So simple a child could have come up with it, scientists say a huge sunshade between Earth and the sun would control the amount of energy that reaches our planet.

It may seem like the stuff of science fiction but researchers have suggested that clouds could be made more shiny to reflect the Sun’s rays back into space.

Dumping piles of iron filings in the sea may not sound the greenest of policies but "seeding" infertile areas of the ocean is known to create plankton "blooms" which take up thousands of tons of carbon dioxide.
The plankton then dies, taking carbon to the bottom of the sea where it can remain for centuries.

After observing that volcanoes cool the planet by spewing sulphates into the atmosphere scientists began carrying out experiments to see if it could be created artificially.
The sulphates reflect the radiation of the Sun back into space before it can warm the Earth creating a ‘global dimming’ effect.

Just kidding. This shit is ridiculous and so is the theory of Man-Made Global Warming.

I didn't read any of that, except the last sentence you wrote. You don't believe the earth's climate has changed because of something human beings have done?

It is not a question of whether or not it has, animals change it every day, so should we shoot all of them? The science on how much is the problem. Plus, unless China and India decide to change their emissions, the paltry amount the US emits is nothing compared to what they are churning into the atmosphere.

One might argue that just because someone else is doing a worse job, that doesn't excuse someone from trying to keep the problem from getting worse. The US isn't exactly a shining example of low emissions, either.

The paltry amount? Lol. We're first per capita by far and second in terms of total co2 tonnage. It ain't "paltry."

We've been doing it for years too. Much like defense spending the USA has outpaced other countries when it comes to pollution, use of energy, amount of cars etc... We're kind of a big deal. If we want other countries to slow their growth and limit pollution we've got set some sort of example.

1. It's a Lagrange point, not Langrange.
2. It's not halfway between the moon and Earth. That's from Space Cowboys, not a physics textbook.
3. The Lagrange point between us and the moon is unstable - any perturbation would cause catastrophic orbit decay.
4. The Earth-moon Lagrange points are irrelevant if we're trying to block the sun.
5. This is what you get for listening to (Strath)ClydeR.

To be fair, most of what used to be science fiction is now run of the mill. Flight, modern medicine, etc etc. Hell, we now have an invisibility cloak.

Haven't we had enough threads on the same topic?

Ohh wait... politics... that's all politics is nowadays, arguing the same points over and over again, regardless of previously agreed upon outcomes.

Er...whatever happened to the Greenhouse Effect? Wouldn't putting a cloud around our planet cause it to trap what heat we did receive? I'm probably missing something.

Actually, History Channel had a neat special a while back about how science fiction in the 40's and 50's led dreamers to grow up and develop a lot of the modern science we have now. Star Trek was one they brought up often...tricorder, anyone?
