However, the further our respondents thought that Ukraine was from its actual location, the more they wanted the U.S. to intervene militarily. Even controlling for a series of demographic characteristics and participants’ general foreign policy attitudes, we found that the less accurate our participants were, the more they wanted the U.S. to use force, the greater the threat they saw Russia as posing to U.S. interests, and the more they thought that using force would advance U.S. national security interests; all of these effects are statistically significant at a 95 percent confidence level. Our results are clear, but also somewhat disconcerting: The less people know about where Ukraine is located on a map, the more they want the U.S. to intervene militarily.

I love the two dots in Nashville. It can't be a coincidence that Hayden Panettiere is engaged to a Klitschko!!!

Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis taught me where every medieval kingdom was/is from the mid 1300's to present.

Crusader Kings taught me that the Roman Empire conquered all of Europe and the Middle East and then was ported over to Europa Universalis and conquered the globe.

I wish we still had World Geography rather than a second year of World History.

I wouldn't have easily picked it off a map, and I lived in Europe. I will say it's no small matter that Russia is annexing countries and might result in military action, but right now I'm sure Obama is telling them to wait until after the election, he'll be more flexible then.

It would really help. My US History students tend to have no clue where any of the other countries are, much less America.

Your state must not be as education minded as Louisiana! We had Geography in High School. :D

It's a weakness. The idea is they get more World History though, which is theoretically good.

I'd have at least expected people to place it near the Black Sea... but I suppose that would mean they need to know where the Black Sea is.

I had a student tell me, with a straight face, that India was in Southern Europe.

To be fair, India is south of Europe, albeit not directly south.

4 out of 7 Americans think multiple pieces of the same item should count as multiple items in the express checkout lane.

We know, of course, that multiples of the same item take up only one space, whether it's apples or watermelons. The point is that you have to enforce the rules uniformly, no matter who is checking out or where the country is that they're invading or how misinformed everybody else is about the issue.

Ukraine is a country in Europe. It exists next to another country called Russia. Russia is a bigger country. Russia is a powerful country. Russia decided to invade a smaller country called Ukraine. So basically, that’s wrong.

When I first started reading your post I was thinking “what is this? A third grade paper on Ukraine?”

Then I remembered this was an actual speech from Kamala Harris. Who was she even talking to when she said this? Was it third graders?

It was a radio interview.

One of the knocks against her has always been her laziness when it came to prepping for things.
