Call it the selfie seen 'round the world.

Among the enduring images from Nelson Mandela's massive memorial service in Johannesburg Tuesday will be one of a jovial President Obama taking a cell phone pic with his seat-mates, Denmark's Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Britain's David Cameron.

As the three of them smile for the camera, a stern-looking Michelle Obama can be seen staring straight ahead, hands clasped. As if to remind anyone who sees this photo years from now that it was, after all, a memorial service for one of the great human rights leaders.

The tsk-tsk-ing could be heard across continents.

"What on earth is going on? Why do world leaders now behave like this?" The Daily Telegraph's Iain Martin wrote. "Perhaps it is just that the current generation -- my generation -- is so appallingly spoiled that basic notions of decorum have been shot to pieces."

RedState.com's Erick Erickson tweeted: "Thank you Mrs. Obama for knowing how to behave at a funeral."

The first lady's reaction -- not just to the "selfie" but to her husband's chatting and joking with the young Danish prime minister -- was priceless. In one picture, Michelle Obama could be seen glaring over at him while he put his hand on Ms. Thorning-Schmidt's shoulder.

In another, it appeared the first lady and the president switched seats, putting Michelle squarely between him and the PM.

The photographer behind the "selfie" pic of the three dignitaries, though, later claimed that the first lady herself was "joking with those around her" a few seconds earlier. "The stern look was captured by chance," he wrote.

After the images surged through social media, the White House on Wednesday released its own set of photos of Obama's South Africa visit. Perhaps it was no accident that among them was a picture of Obama, the first lady and the Danish prime minister.

But in this one, Obama was talking to his wife, while Thorning-Schmidt seemed preoccupied with her phone.

The "selfie" incident was the second unexpected controversy stirred up by the president in South Africa. Earlier, Cuban-American lawmakers publicly objected after Obama -- on his way to deliver his tribute to Mandela -- shook the hand of Raul Castro.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., called the moment "nauseating."

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who was at the Johannesburg service, walked out when Castro spoke.

I think the picture was in bad taste, I think anyone taking a "selfie" at a funeral or service or whatever is in bad taste. As president you would think he would know better but meh, he's Obama so what do ya expect?

My favorite part of this story is reading the excuses people are giving for Obama.

"He wasn't the one taking the selfie! It was her!" (yes, Obama is just in the picture by accident.)

"They weren't taking a selfie, they were just looking at something on her phone!" (nevermind the fact that the British dude already admitted it was a selfie.)

"Who cares?! The service was all about the celebration of Mandela! It wasn't supposed to be a solemn occasion!" (really?)

"It's okay to take a selfie at a funeral!" (my favorite one by far.)

Amusing situation of Michelle Obama making him switch seats when he was getting too chummy with the Danish PM.

Dude, learn to read. I already covered this excuse in my first post:

"Who cares?! The service was all about the celebration of Mandela! It wasn't supposed to be a solemn occasion!" (really?)

Either it was a traumatic event or it wasn't.

It was: coping is not a straight line. People laugh, people cry, people are silent. I don't understand the purpose of criticizing someone else's healthy coping mechanisms. Not "purpose", what's the word I'm looking for? Gall.

It wasn't: it certainly didn't bother Mandela. Show me one source where Nelson Mandela expressed displeasure at President Obama's behavior. (Granted, they are fellow Africans, but still.)

I just got to say....

Imagine if Bush had did this.

No wait.. you can't he, had decorum and respect for others.

Just judging by past behavior I believe Bush would have given the Dane a foot massage.

It was a 3 hour long celebration in a stadium, not a funeral. What's the president supposed to do, say no, I don't want my pic taken? And dude, selfies have one person in them, unless someone's photo bombing. Makes a great headline; no substance. Run with it Fox!

Nice try but this is being covered all over the world. Heck I found that link to the Fox site on HuffPost no less.

He's lost his MOJO that's all. But back in the day his presidential paws were prone to wander inappropriately. Ask Angela.

R u Kidding me! Look at that cleavage. Some have even called her the German Margaret Thatcher. Now that's sexy. Berlusconi just never forgave her for not dancing at one of his Bunga Bunga parties.

Then you read the HuffPost article too. A decidedly different take. And just because you covered an issue doesn't determine truth from fiction, or make someone else's photo op with the president into a selfie. But go ahead, whip up some selfie-righteous indignation!

Just to make sure we're all on the same page a selfie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selfie) is "typically taken either with a camera held at arm's length or in a mirror, and typically include either only the photographer, or the photographer and as many people as can be in focus. Selfies taken that involve multiple people are known as "group selfies"."

Yeah.. It's just a photo op, it's not like the person is the head of state for their country and likely could get a picture taken with Mr B at any time they wanted. Seriously, just let them get their chance at a photo with a celebrity and move on.

I don't care what political party, race, or belief
If this was someone that meant something in your life
You would have been offended by this.
