Convicted Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) is scheduled to receive $8,700 per month in government disability pay, as well as a partial federal pension of $45,000. That generous $8,700 in disability comes thanks to Jackson’s sudden development of a “mood disorder” as the federal government began looking to indict him. Jackson, who was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, had no history of mental illness during his prior 17 years in Congress. Rev. Jesse Jackson has defended his son’s claims of mental illness, stating to the court, “This time a year ago I thought we may have lost him.”

That's more in a month than most real disabled people get in probably an entire year.

For $104,400 a year, I find myself suddenly having mood problems too.

Sweet, 100% disability from the US Military WITH children is 3,088 a month. To collect 100% you generally have no arms or legs, probably blinded and can't take care of yourself. If this story is completely true, then it is very fucked up.

The perks people get for holding public office are ridiculous. Shocker.. they are the ones voting IN the perks.

There's one error in the article...the partial federal pension of 45k a year doesn't start til age 65.

Not quite understanding how the disability pay is so high though. Guess it's based on his Congressional salary or something.

That said, I find it hilarious that Congress only makes it a partial pension if you are criminally convicted of something related to official duties, as opposed to wiping out the pension entirely. Apparently the change happened in 2007. Before that, even if you got convicted of something related to official duties, you got the full pension. (Jackson Jr. voted for the change, ironically.)

Wait...democrats took control over Congress and then passed a bill to not have your pensions wiped out if they're convicted of a crime?

Inconceivable! Democrats are the most honest politicians ever, and I refuse to believe it!

You are not understanding what was said. The Democrats changed it so that you would lose at least part of your pension if you were convicted of a crime relating to official duties, before they changed it you would keep the entire pension.

So yeah, on this issue the Democrats are the more honest politicians.

Sure, sure, blame it on Bush.

Pensions are protected in Canada, pretty sure near 100%. There was a high profile case with Col. Russel Williams. Convicted serial killer, and even his pension couldn't be touched. Even though he'll never be free.

And yet another example of how we, as a people, have allowed a small portion of our society to completely manipulate the system. Common sense is no longer existent in the US.
